Berries – summer fruits

Health-boosting treats

Berries grow in moderate climates with their fruit ripening in the summer months. In Germany, strawberries are the first to ripen, followed by currants, gooseberries, raspberries and, finally, blackberries. Ripe fruits contain fruit sugars and are therefore often very sweet. What’s more, these summer treats are extremely healthy.

Thanks to the nutrients they contain (vitamin C, B3 and B5, carotene, folic acid, antioxidants, potassium and calcium), these berries help strengthen the immune system, boost the metabolism and are also a source of energy and vitality – properties which one certainly needs in the summer months. Berries can be eaten either raw or cooked and are ideal for use in delicious sweet dishes and cakes.

People are becoming increasingly aware of the health benefits of berries, which, in turn, is having a positive effect on turnover. In 2001, after apples and bananas, berries were the most popular fruit amongst consumers. The average German eats more than 6.3 kg of berries each year – resulting in a total of 522,000 tonnes of fruit.
